Sobre el proyecto<\/h2>\n

La contaminaci\u00f3n lum\u00ednica es un problema que va mucho m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de no poder ver las estrellas: cambios en los ecosistemas, derroche de energ\u00eda, efectos sobre nuestra salud, etc.<\/p>\n

NightUp tiene como objetivo generar una herramienta que sea \u00fatil para los cient\u00edficos y expertos que investigan este tipo de contaminaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

Gracias a la participaci\u00f3n ciudadana, se obtendr\u00e1 un mapa del color de la luz artificial en Castelldefels que ayudar\u00eda a entender mejor el impacto del color en la contaminaci\u00f3n lum\u00ednica. Si este primer proyecto es exitoso, se llevar\u00e1 a nivel global para poder generar un mapa de todo el mundo.<\/p>\n

La contaminaci\u00f3n lum\u00ednica es la suma de todos los efectos negativos que la luz artificial tiene sobre el medio ambiente. Esto incluye el impacto de toda esa luz que no cumple con su prop\u00f3sito, como por ejemplo ocurre cuando el sistema de iluminaci\u00f3n est\u00e1 mal dirigido o la luz es demasiado intensa.<\/p>\n

La iluminaci\u00f3n artificial tiene claros efectos beneficiosos: \u00a1es complicado imaginar nuestra vida sin la posibilidad de encender las luces de noche! Necesitamos luz artificial en muchas situaciones para que nuestra sociedad funcione, pero hay que usarla de forma correcta para limitar su contaminaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

Alrededor de la mitad la poblaci\u00f3n de la Uni\u00f3n Europea y m\u00e1s de dos tercios de la poblaci\u00f3n de EE.UU. viven rodeados de tanta luz artificial, que de noche no puede observar la V\u00eda L\u00e1ctea a simple vista. Este tipo de contaminaci\u00f3n, adem\u00e1s de impedir que se pueda disfrutar de un cielo estrellado por las noches, tambi\u00e9n genera desequilibrios en los ecosistemas, tiene efectos en la salud de las personas y supone un gasto de energ\u00eda y dinero muchas veces innecesario.<\/p>\n

Todos los aspectos de la luz artificial (intensidad, color, direcci\u00f3n de la luz, horas en que se mantiene encendida la luz, \u2026) juegan un papel propio en el impacto que pueda tener la contaminaci\u00f3n lum\u00ednica. Por eso, hace falta informaci\u00f3n detallada sobre cada uno de estos aspectos para entender el papel que juega cada uno de los par\u00e1metros y tener una visi\u00f3n completa y clara de los efectos que la luz artificial puede tener en el medio ambiente y en nuestra salud.<\/p>\n

Actualmente, los cient\u00edficos disponen de mapas con informaci\u00f3n sobre la intensidad de la luz artificial que les permiten hacer estudios de impacto ambiental en varias zonas del planeta. Estos datos se obtienen mediante im\u00e1genes de la Tierra hechas desde sat\u00e9lites en el espacio. El problema es que los dispositivos que realizan estas im\u00e1genes solo pueden obtener informaciones sobre la intensidad de la luz, sin tener alguna indicaci\u00f3n sobre su color.<\/p>\n

Sin embargo, en los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os se ha demostrado que el impacto de la luz difiere seg\u00fan el color. En general, parece ser que las luces con m\u00e1s componentes azules suelen tener m\u00e1s efectos negativos que las que son m\u00e1s amarillas o rojizas. Por esto, los cient\u00edficos necesitan una herramienta que permita investigar la relaci\u00f3n entre el color de la luz y los distintos efectos de la contaminaci\u00f3n lum\u00ednica.<\/p>\n

El objetivo de NightUp es ayudar a los cient\u00edficos a generar un mapa del color de la luz artificial para poder extraer conclusiones sobre los efectos del color de la luz artificial en los seres vivos y los ecosistemas. La participaci\u00f3n de la ciudadan\u00eda es fundamental para obtener informaci\u00f3n local y detallada, que ser\u00eda muy complicada (y costosa) de obtener de otra manera. Con NightUp puedes participar activamente en un experimento cient\u00edfico, contribuyendo a avanzar en la b\u00fasqueda de soluciones a un problema global, como la contaminaci\u00f3n lum\u00ednica.<\/p>\n

Para participar en NightUp hay que tomar fotos de los diferentes elementos de luz artificial que se encuentran por las calles, plazas y caminos de Castelldefels a trav\u00e9s de la aplicaci\u00f3n web del proyecto. Todas las im\u00e1genes ser\u00e1n analizadas posteriormente, con el objetivo de generar un mapa del color de la luz artificial de Castelldefels. De esta forma, podr\u00e1s ayudar a los cient\u00edficos y expertos en contaminaci\u00f3n lum\u00ednica a la vez que descubres la noche de Castelldefels desde otra perspectiva. DE CASTELLDEFELS AL MUNDO ENTERO<\/h3>\n

Para participar en NightUp, se necesita un \u00fanico instrumento de medida: la c\u00e1mara del m\u00f3vil. Esto es una cosa inusual en un experimento cient\u00edfico y es un reto importante para el proyecto. Para obtener resultados v\u00e1lidos y fiables, los cient\u00edficos normalmente utilizan instrumentos bien calibrados y bajo condiciones controladas. En NightUp extraemos informaci\u00f3n de fotos tomadas con instrumentos diferentes y que no se han dise\u00f1ado para realizar experimentos cient\u00edficos: las c\u00e1maras de nuestros m\u00f3viles. Para que los datos recogidos con NightUp tengan validez cient\u00edfica y puedan ser \u00fatiles para investigaciones posteriores, es fundamental poder comparar la informaci\u00f3n obtenida con tantos instrumentos diferentes y en condiciones variables no controladas y poder crear as\u00ed un mapa coherente de la contaminaci\u00f3n lum\u00ednica.<\/p>\n

Es por esto que NightUp empieza como un proyecto piloto en Castelldefels que valide el m\u00e9todo de recogida de los datos. Si en esta primera fase demostramos que es posible recopilar informaci\u00f3n con el rigor cient\u00edfico necesario, extenderemos NightUp al resto del mundo, para poder crear un mapa global del color de la luz artificial. An\u00e1lisis y resultados<\/h3>\n

Podemos reproducir cualquier color en una pantalla digital a partir de los tres colores primarios: rojo, verde y azul. Es por eso que las c\u00e1maras digitales registran la intensidad de estos tres colores fundamentales por cada pixel de la foto. La proporci\u00f3n entre la intensidad de luz roja, azul y verde de los pixeles en el halo de la fuente de luz nos dar\u00e1 informaci\u00f3n cuantitativa sobre el color de la luz del elemento fotografiado.<\/p>\n

Unos algoritmos de inteligencia artificial nos ayudar\u00e1n a identificar la posici\u00f3n de la fuente de luz en la foto.<\/p>\n

Compararemos la informaci\u00f3n de cada foto con la de fotos tomadas en posiciones cercanas para validar la informaci\u00f3n. Juntaremos la informaci\u00f3n de todas las fotos recibidas para crear un mapa de Castelldefels dividida en diferentes regiones seg\u00fan el color de las fuentes de luz. Este es un instrumento muy valioso para los cient\u00edficos que estudian la contaminaci\u00f3n lum\u00ednica, ya que tienen muy pocas fuentes de datos disponibles con tanta resoluci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n
