International day of women and girls in science

Immerse yourself in the world of photonics thanks to 4 ICFO female scientists, who will tell in 5 minutes in an attractive and inspiring way why photonics is important for their research and society in general. You can also send them your questions about science and their careers.
This event is aimed at students between 9th and 12th grade (second cycle of ESO and bachillerato) and will be in Spanish.
Photonics in 5 minutes! is organized in the framework of ICFO Women in Science Month to celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, joining the Iniciativa 11 de Febrero.

10:40-11:00: Flash talks by the speakers
11:00-11:30: Q&A session – the speakers will answer live the questions from the audience.
The event will be on YouTube Live. You don’t need any additional program or app to stream the event and interact with us: you just need a computer with internet connection.
You can send us your questions in advance at outreach@icfo.eu or write them in the live chat during the event.
If you’re attending the event with your students from the school, we have some additional recommendations:
- Connect the computer to a large screen so that the students can have a better view.
- Connect external speakers to the computer in order to improve the audio quality.
SPEAKERS
María MARSAL
Researcher at the Biology Lab and the Super Resolution Optical Microscopy Unit
She has a degree in Biology from the UB. She obtained her doctorate in Developmental Biology at the Genetics Department of the UB. In the postdoctoral period she has combined her research in Biology with the use of optical microscopy (CSIC and ICFO). She is part of the team responsible for super-resolution optical microscopy and the Biology laboratory at the ICFO.
CATARINA gonçalves Ferreira
Pre-doctoral researcher at ICFO
Catarina Gonçalves Ferreira received her master degree in Physics in 2017 from University of Minho (Portugal). She is currently finishing her PhD at ICFO. Her current work focuses on the numerical simulation and optimization of solar cell structures for improved absorption and short circuit current.
She is the first author of 3 publications and has some international experience in research (Portugal and Spain).
jennifer aldama-guardia
Pre-doctoral researcher at ICFO
Jennifer Aldama-Guardia obtained her B.Sc. degree in Physics from the National University of Trujillo, Perú, and her M.Sc. degree in Physics from the University of Puerto Rico. Currently, she is pursuing the PhD in Photonics at ICFO where she is working on the development of Quantum Key Distribution systems.

Outreach team at ICFO
Federica Beduini obtained her PhD in Photonics with a project on experimental quantum physics at ICFO. Since 2015, she has been part of ICFO’s outreach team.
She is currently coordinating the citizen science experiments, like the BIG Bell Test and NightUp, and the outreach activities directed to the general public and schools, such as the Young Photonic Congress.
