photonics in 5 minutes!
at the festa de la ciència 2021

june 13, 2021

12:40 CEST

Immerse yourself in the world of photonics thanks to 3 ICFO scientists, who will explain in 5 minutes each in an attractive and inspiring way why photonics is important for their research and for society in general. There will also be time to ask them your questions about science and their careers.

This event is aimed at people older than 16 years old and will be in Spanish.

You will find this in-person edition of Photonics in 5 Minutes! at the Festa de la Ciència of Barcelona on June 13, 2021 at 12:40 at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB).

SPEAKERS

Lorenzo CortesE

Postdoctoral researcher at ICFO

Dr. Lorenzo Cortese is a researcher at the Medical Optics group at ICFO since 2016. He obtained his doctorate degree in 2016 at the European Laboratory for Non-Linear Spectroscopy (LENS) – University of Florence (Italy), dedicated to the fields of micro/nano-photonics, complex photonics systems and bio-inspired photonics. At ICFO, he has worked in several international research projects involving research institutions, clinical institutions and high technology biomedical companies. His work focuses on multi-modal imaging technologies, diffuse correlation spectroscopy and near infrared spectroscopy, designing and performing experiments in the laboratory and in clinics.

Constanza Sansierra

PhD student at ICFO

Constanza Sansierra was born in Santiago del Estero, Argentina. She got her degree in Chemistry and a Master in Materials Science from Instituto Sabato (UNSAM) in Buenos Aires, where her project was awarded the best Master research on materials science in 2016. She later joined CNEA (Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica) working on new technologies for nuclear waste disposal management in Argentina. Constanza is currently a PhD student at ICFO, in the Organic nanostructured photovoltaics group lead by Prof. Dr. Jordi Martorell. Her project focusses on “Artificial photosynthesis” to develop photoelectrochemical devices for renewable fuels production that incorporate photonic nanostructures capable to manage and maximize sunlight utilization.

Darío Lago Rivera

PhD student at ICFO

Graduated in Physics from the University of Santiago de Compostela. He is doing his doctoral thesis at ICFO, in the group of Prof. Dr. Hugues de Riedmatten. There, he tries to entangle remote solid-state quantum memories. The entanglement between quantum memories is a fundamental requirement to be able to build a Quantum Internet that will allow highly secure communications over long distances. He spends part of his free time making scientific videos for the general public on the YouTube channel “O Son das Ideas”.
